What items do I need for my baby?

Your baby doesn’t need much in the first few weeks. Some items can be borrowed from other parents. But maybe you enjoy buying new items with your partner. Ideally, you should have most things ready 4 to 5 weeks before the expected delivery date, because your baby may be in a hurry to arrive.

Breastfeeding:

  • Breastfeeding pillows
  • 3 to 4 breastfeeding bras
  • Nursing pads
  • Special juices and teas for nursing mothers to cover the increased demand for iodine, iron and other vitamins
  • Milk pump, optional

Baby bottles:

  • 3 to 4 bottles with milk and juice teats in the smallest size (to be sterilised in boiling water after each use)
  • Bottle cleaning brush
  • Bottle warmer, optional
  • Thermos flask for preparation on the move

Baby care equipment   

  • Nappies (smallest size)   
  • Wet wipes   
  • Washcloth   
  • Washing lotion   
  • Baby cream   
  • 6 to 8 muslin cloths   
  • Towel with hood   
  • Bath thermometer   
  • Thermometer   
  • Baby hairbrush   
  • Rounded nail scissors

Clothing (size 56 or 62)   

  • 6 to 8 vests/bodysuits 
  • 4 to 6 long-armed shirts or light jumpers   
  • 2 to 3 babygros   
  • 4 pairs of trousers, 2 with and 2 without feet   
  • 2 to 3 pairs of socks   
  • Jacket   
  • Hat

Clothing in winter   

  • 2 to 3 pairs of thick socks   
  • Tights   
  • Mittens   
  • Jumpsuit for outdoors

On the move   

  • Pushchair   
  • Foot-muff or blanket for the pushchair   
  • Baby car seat   
  • Foot-muff or blanket for the car seat   
  • Sun screen for the pushchair
