Basic insurance
Health insurance is mandatory in Switzerland. This means that if you live or work in Switzerland, you have to take out basic insurance in accordance with the Swiss Health Insurance Act (KVG/HIA). The benefits are identical among all health insurance providers, but there are differences in the services provided.
Supplementary insurance
Supplementary insurance is governed by the Swiss Federal Act on Insurance Policies (VVG/IPA). It closes gaps in coverage, i.e. it covers costs for medical and health services that are not included under basic insurance. With dental treatment, for example, you have to cover the costs yourself unless you take out appropriate supplementary insurance for your teeth.
