Pregnancy is a special time, but it’s exhausting, too – both physically and mentally. To help you relax and enjoy your pregnancy without all the worries, we’ve put together a few tips for you.


Fresh air: Get outdoors as often as possible.

Diet and nutrition: Eat a balanced diet, and drink plenty of water. Find out which foodstuffs you should avoid during pregnancy to reduce the risks of an infection.

Supplements: Your doctor will prescribe folic acid and any vitamins you need.

Harmful substances: Before taking any medicines, ask your doctor whether they are safe for women during pregnancy. Do not drink alcohol, smoke or take drugs as these substances have a harmful effect on your unborn child. A smoke-free environment is best for your baby.

Infectious diseases: Avoid contact with persons (including children) with infectious diseases.

Toxoplasmosis: It’s important to avoid initial infection during pregnancy. To be on the safe side, it’s advisable not to eat raw or undercooked meat (including poultry). Always wash your hands and kitchen utensils thoroughly after handling raw meat.

Cats and toxoplasmosis: If you have a cat and are unsure whether you are immune to toxoplasmosis, wear gloves while cleaning the litter tray during pregnancy. Cat owners must be particularly careful about hygiene at this time.

Physical activity: Do not push yourself to the limit during sporting activities. You should be able to talk normally at all times during exercise.

Stress: Avoid all kinds of stress, because it can have a negative impact on your pregnancy – both physically and mentally. Take breaks more often.

Travel/holidays: In your first trimester, air travel and long car journeys shouldn’t be a problem, but consult your doctor first. The second trimester is the best time to take longer holidays.

Employer/employment law: Let your employer know that you’re pregnant so you can take time off in case of sickness, and familiarise yourself with the pertinent points of the employment law  (Art. 35ff.: Protection against undue stress).

Low blood pressure: Avoid situations that can cause low blood pressure and thus circulatory problems (e.g. rapid ascent or longer periods at heights above 2,500 m.)

Clothes and shoes: Don’t wear tight clothes or high heels. Flat shoes help you maintain a healthy posture and reduce the risk of leg cramps and other painful ailments.

Initial check-ups: Help identify any problems with your pregnancy early on. There are general and specific examinations as well as invasive and non-invasive tests. Details can be found here.

Skin care: Apply cream more regularly as this helps prevent stretch marks and keeps the skin elastic, which helps it recover more easily after the birth. 

Dental hygiene: Take even greater care when cleaning your teeth during pregnancy as they are more susceptible to decay at this time, and gum inflammation or poor oral hygiene are risk factors for premature delivery. Use soft brushes and fluoride toothpaste. Don’t use bleaching products while you’re pregnant, but do have your teeth professionally cleaned.
