The all-clear for pushchairs

Looking for pushchair-friendly trails? Gesa Walk, 34, project manager at Sanitas, took her son Mattis along the Pfannenstiel trail high above Lake Zurich to test it out.

Tested for you: the Pfannenstiel trail

Route: Forch–Meilen
Walking time:
2 hours 25 minutes
Ideal season for hiking:
Summer and autumn
Forchbahn from Zurich

Getting there and back

“You can take the Forchbahn/S18 train from Zurich Stadelhofen to the Forch stop, where the walk begins. Thanks to the level access, the Forchbahn train is ideal for pushchairs. My tip: at the Forch stop, get out at the back of the train so you can cross the tracks without any problems. For the return journey: an S-Bahn train leaves Meilen station four times an hour heading towards Zurich or Rapperswil.”

Varied trail

“The Pfannenstiel trail offers everything from tarmac roads to forest paths with everything from gravel and small pebbles to larger stones. At the beginning the trail heads steeply uphill for around 20 minutes through meadows and woods, with great views opening up towards Greifensee Lake and Uster. The moderately steep descent into Meilen offers fantastic views of Lake Zurich, Pilatus and the Alps. After around 35 minutes, the trail forks towards Meilen, either along the ravine or the road. I  definitely recommend taking the path along the road. Please note that some parts of the trail are too narrow to fit two pushchairs alongside each other.”

Restaurant stop

“At almost the midway point, you reach the Hochwacht restaurant, the ideal spot for a light refreshment! There was a high chair available, but we couldn’t find a changing table in the toilets near the outside area.”

Moderate difficulty

“I really worked up a sweat climbing up, and the descent is a great workout for your thighs. With a stroller, you need to have a moderate level of fitness for what is supposed to be an easy walk. I wouldn’t recommend this hike for women who have only recently had a baby.”
