You’re flying the nest! What does this mean for your health insurance? Your change of address leads to changes to your policy. We explain why.
Your own policy
Now you’re moving out, you’ll no longer be included under the family policy as you don’t live at the same address as your parents any more. You’ll be transferred to your own insurance policy. We’ll send you an amended quote as soon as you’ve notified us of your change of address. Use this opportunity to check whether you’re still happy with your insurance cover.
New home, new premium
When you move, your health insurance premium doesn’t necessarily follow. It could be higher or lower, depending on the premium region you live in. Switzerland currently has 42 premium regions. Every canton has at least one region and a maximum of three. In rare cases, the premium region may change even if you only move across the road.
Why are there premium regions?
Premium regions are designed to balance out the varying healthcare costs within a canton. They are defined by the Federal Department of Home Affairs (EDI) based on the following criteria:
Generally, health insurance premiums tend to be higher in cities than in rural areas. However, the EDI specifies that the difference in premiums must be no more than 15% between region 1 and region 2 and no more than 10% between region 2 and region 3.
