Deciding to try for a baby is a big step. There are a few things you should bear in mind before falling pregnant. For example, do you know what benefits are covered under your basic insurance? We’ve also put together some tips on the topic of planning a family, taking in everything from health and sport to ovulation and fertility.
Check your insurance cover
We recommend you check your insurance cover in good time. Are you happy with the benefits of mandatory basic insurance or would you like extra benefits?
If you answer “yes” to one of these questions, we recommend taking out semiprivate or private hospital insurance before you become pregnant.
Be mindful of waiting periods
It’s important to consider these questions early on, because there is a waiting period when taking out supplementary insurance plans. No costs will be covered until this waiting period expires. In the worst case scenario, you’ll only be able to take advantage of the benefits once your baby is born. Health insurers offer different waiting periods for maternity. With Sanitas, entitlement to maternity benefits commences 9 months after receipt of the application.
