What is Tardoc?

Since 1 Janaury 2026 , Tardoc and the outpatient flat rates have formed the new tariff structure for outpatient medical services in Switzerland. Together, they replace the previous Tarmed tariff and regulated how outpatient treatments in doctors’ practices and hospitals are billed.

The tariff system comprises a total of around 1,370 Tardoc items and 315 outpatient flat rates and is continuously being further developed: The tariff partners – such as doctors’ practices and hospitals – review and update the tariff structures on an annual basis to adapt them to current medical developments. This also allows modern treatment methods to be incorporated.

When were Tardoc and the outpatient flat rates introduced?

Tardoc and the outpatient flat rates were introduced nationwide in Switzerland on 1 January 2026, replacing the previous Tarmed tariff. Since then, they have formed the new overall tariff system for outpatient medical services.

Which services do Tardoc and the outpatient flat rates apply to?

Doctors use Tardoc to bill services such as:

  • Initial consultations and advice
  • Follow-up consultations on a different day
  • Examinations and diagnoses

In addition, outpatient flat rates are used to bill all services provided on a single day of treatment. For example:

  • Outpatient surgical procedures, including all associated services
  • Treatments carried out on the same day

How is the price of a medical service calculated?

Each medical service is assigned a specific number of  tariff points. These are defined by the tariff organisation and indicate how complex and costly a treatment is.

The actual price in Swiss francs is determined by the tariff point value. This value is negotiated between doctors , hospitals and health insurers. The final price is calculated by multiplying the number of tariff points by the tariff point value.

Example: A service with 10 tariff points and a tariff point value of CHF 0.90 can be billed at CHF 9 .

Does the outpatient medical tariff also apply to dentists?

No. Dentists in Switzerland use their own uniform tariff, known as the dental tariff. It includes more than 500 individual services.

As with the dental tariff, each service is assigned a specific number of tariff points and a tariff point value to determine the price. For treatments billed through health of accident insurance, the tariff point value is fixed. For all other treatments, dentists are free to set the tariff point value themselves. It is therefore worth comparing offers from different dentists.
