Use the termination service at least two weeks before the end of the notice period. Do not terminate your supplementary insurance until you have received confirmation of admission from Sanitas.

Deadlines: Until when can you change health insurer?

  • Period of notice for basic insurance

    Switch with effect 1 January


    You can change health insurer at the start of each year.

    Period of notice


    Your notice of termination must reach your current health insurer by November 30 at the latest, or the last working day in November.

    Switch with effect 1 July


    If you have an insurance model with your current provider with the lowest deductible (adults: CHF 300, children: CHF 0) and the standard model with free choice of doctor (not a family doctor, network or telemedicine model), you can switch health insurer with effect 1 July.

    Period of notice


    Your notice of termination must reach your current health insurer by March 31 at the latest, or the last working day in March.

  • Period of notice for supplementary insurance

    Take out a new supplementary insurance plan


    You can take out and terminate supplementary insurance plans independent of basic insurance. If you don’t have supplementary insurance yet, you can take out a supplementary insurance plan with Sanitas at any time.

    Terminate current supplementary insurance


    Deadlines for termination vary depending on the health insurer. Please check the exact deadlines with your health insurance company. Don’t terminate your current supplementary insurance until you have confirmation of admission to your new Sanitas insurance plan.

Notice of termination must be given in writing and signed by hand. All health insurers accept notice of termination by post. Some health insurers also accept notice of termination by email. Get information in good time.

Pay unpaid invoices


You can only terminate basic insurance if all your bills have been paid.

All insureds affected have to sign the termination form.


Are other people included in the contract? Due to the high probative value, we recommend signing the notice of termination and sending it by registered mail – for all persons of legal age who are affected by the termination.

Don’t be too quick to terminate your supplementary insurance


Don’t terminate your current supplementary insurance until you have confirmation of admission to your new supplementary insurance plan.

  • Can I terminate my health insurance by phone or email?

    You must terminate your health insurance in writing. All health insurers accept notice of termination by post. Some also accept notice of termination by email. Please contact your current health insurer for more information. Due to the high probative value, we recommend signing the notice of termination and sending it by registered mail. All persons of legal age affected by the termination have to sign the notice of termination.

  • Which date applies to the notice of termination?

    The date on which your notice of termination is received by the health insurance company applies.

  • Do I have to send the notice of termination to my health insurer by registered mail?

    You can send the notice of termination using A or B post. It is important that the notice of termination reaches your insurer in good time. In order to have proof of timely termination, we recommend that you send the termination by registered mail.

  • What do I need to bear in mind with the Sanitas termination service?

    In the online premium calculator, you have the option of choosing the free termination service for your basic and supplementary insurance. Please note that Sanitas is also obliged to observe the statutory periods of notice. Therefore only use this service no later than two weeks before the deadline. Forgotten to choose the termination service in the premium calculator? No problem. Just contact the Sanitas customer service team.

  • Can I just change my basic insurance and keep my supplementary insurance?

    Yes, you can take out and terminate basic insurance independently of supplementary insurance. Simply note your wish on the termination letter to your health insurance company.

  • My health insurer has adjusted the premium of my supplementary insurance. Can I cancel outside the regular deadlines?

    Yes, if the health insurance company increases or decreases the premium of your supplementary insurance, the notice period will be adjusted. You can then terminate your insurance, for example, to the end of the year or as of the date of the increase. Please check the exact periods of notice with your health insurance company.

  • I’d like to stay with Sanitas but save money on my premium at the same time. Is that possible?

    Yes, that possible. You can choose from alternative basic insurance models and benefit from attractive premium discounts. You can also increase your deductible if you have not chosen the maximum amount. Please notify us of your change request by no later than 30  November so that we can ensure the adjustment is made by 1  January.
