New: full cover even with

a pre-existing condition

Individual premium supplement

With the individual premium supplement, Sanitas is the first health insurer in Switzerland to offer many of its customers the option to take out supplementary insurance without a restriction.

Full cover

The individual premium supplement makes it possible for you to take out insurance cover for a range of pre-existing conditions. However, applications may still be rejected.

Flexibility

In most cases, you can choose between an individual premium supplement or a restriction. This way, your insurance cover can be adjusted to meet your needs.

Innovative solution

A unique and ground-breaking option that gives you easier access to full supplementary insurance.

* This offer applies to a wide range of possible illnesses . However, depending on the particular illness or health situation, an application may still be rejected.

What is an individual premium supplement?

The individual premium supplement is a percentage surcharge applied to the basic monthly premium for supplementary insurance. This makes it possible to include a wide range of pre-existing conditions and consequences of accidents in the contract, thus ensuring comprehensive insurance cover. Important: Depending on the pre-existing illness, Sanitas may still reject your insurance application.

Individual premium supplements: simply explained

What does a health check involve?

All insurance companies want to know what risk they are taking on when they accept an insurance application. So, when you apply to take out supplementary insurance, the health insurer asks questions about your state of health. These health questions relate to illnesses and treatments you have had in the last five years. You have to answer these questions truthfully.

Based on the health questions, we check during the application process whether admission to the chosen supplementary insurance is possible even with a pre-existing health condition and whether we can make an offer with an individual premium supplement and/or a restriction. Wherever possible, we offer both so you can decide which option suits you best.

What is a pre-existing condition?

Pre-existing conditions include symptoms, illnesses and consequences of accidents that existed before you submitted the application or that still exist. For example, asthma, anxiety or depression.

What is a restriction?

A restriction means that the supplementary insurance doesn’t cover certain costs or only covers part of the costs.

Why are applications rejected?

Sometimes health insurers reject an insurance application, because they consider the risk of having to bear high costs to be too high. In this way, the health insurance company aims to prevent premiums from increasing for those already insured.

Frequently asked questions

  • I have been rejected for supplementary insurance in the past. Will Sanitas accept my application with an individual premium supplement?

We will check your application when you submit the health check. However, it is not possible to make a general statement as to whether your application will be approved, nor can we say in advance whether you will receive an individual premium supplement or a restriction.

  • Which supplementary insurance plans can be taken out with an individual premium supplement?

All hospital insurance plans, the Vital, Medical Private, Easy and Capital plans and insurance plans in the Sanitas Corporate Private Care product line.

  • What is the difference between an individual premium supplement and a restriction?

An individual premium supplement extends the insurance cover. You pay a slightly higher premium in return. A restriction excludes certain insurance benefits and thus reduces the insurance cover without affecting the premium.

  • Can an existing restriction be replaced by an individual premium supplement?

This option will be introduced for Sanitas customers during the course of 2025. Another health check will be required to check whether this is possible. If you are interested, please contact Customer Service or use the contact form.

  • Can I take out supplementary insurance without a health check, i.e. without answering the health questions?

Unfortunately, this is not possible, because health insurers need to know exactly the cost risk of the person to be insured before the contract is concluded.

  • I have supplementary insurance with Sanitas. Can I change my current insurance contract with a restriction to one with an individual premium supplement?

Customers who have at least one restriction applied to their Sanitas supplementary insurance can take advantage of this offer from 2026. A new health check will need to be completed. Good to know: An offer with an individual premium supplement will not be possible in all cases. If you are interested, please contact Customer Service or use the contact form.
