full cover even with a pre-existing condition*
Individual premium supplement
With the individual premium supplement, Sanitas is the first health insurer in Switzerland to offer many of its customers the option to take out supplementary insurance without a restriction.
What is an individual premium supplement?
The individual premium supplement is a surcharge applied to the monthly premium of a supplementary insurance plan of your choice. Although your premium will be slightly higher, you benefit from full insurance cover for your selected plan even with pre-existing health conditions or the consequences of an accident. This is a major advantage compared to a restriction. Important: unfortunately, we cannot guarantee an individual premium supplement for every pre-existing condition, and some insurance applications may still need to be rejected.
Individual premium supplements: simply explained
What does a health check involve?
All insurance providers have to calculate their risk when accepting insurance applications. That’s why health insurers use health questions to determine your state of health when you apply for supplementary insurance. These questions relate to illnesses and treatments over the last five years. You have to answer these questions truthfully.
Based on your answers to the health questions during the application process, we check whether you can be admitted to supplementary insurance even with a pre-existing condition and whether we can make you an offer with an individual premium supplement and/or a restriction. Wherever possible, we offer both options, and you decide which is best for you.
What is meant by a pre-existing condition and restriction?
What is meant by a pre-existing condition and restriction?
Pre-existing conditions include complaints, illnesses and consequences of accidents that existed or still exist before the applicant submitted their application – for example asthma, anxiety disorders or depression.
A restriction means that the supplementary insurance doesn’t cover certain costs or only covers part of the costs.
Why might an application be rejected?
Sometimes health insurers reject an insurance application if they assess the risk of having to bear high costs as too great. In this way, the health insurance company aims to prevent premiums from increasing for those already insured.
Frequently asked questions
-
I have been rejected for supplementary insurance in the past. Will Sanitas accept my application with an individual premium supplement?
In many cases, we can make an offer with an individual premium supplement, but unfortunately not always. This question can only be answered with an individual health check. When you submit an application for supplementary insurance to Sanitas, we ask you questions about your health. Based on your answers, we check whether we can offer you an individual premium supplement.
-
Which supplementary insurance plans can be taken out with an individual premium supplement?
All hospital insurance plans as well as the Vital, Medical Private, Easy and Capital Accident supplementary insurance plans. An individual premium supplement can also be applied to insurance plans in the Sanitas Corporate Private Care line.
-
What is the difference between an individual premium supplement and a restriction?
A restriction excludes certain cost coverage for pre-existing conditions or consequences of accidents, without affecting the premium. Although your premium will be a little higher with an individual premium supplement, you will receive full insurance cover for your selected plan (e.g. hospital insurance) even with pre-existing health conditions or the consequences of an accident.
-
I have supplementary insurance with Sanitas. Can I change my current insurance contract with a restriction to one with an individual premium supplement?
We are happy to examine each case individually. To be eligible, you must have at least one restriction applied to a Sanitas supplementary insurance plan and have to complete a new health check. Important: An offer with an individual premium supplement will not be possible in all cases. If you are interested, please contact Customer Service or use the contact form.
-
Can I take out supplementary insurance without a health check, i.e. without answering the health questions?
Unfortunately, this is not possible. The information on your state of health helps us to assess your application appropriately. This is the only way for us to ensure fair premiums for all customers.
-
Will applicants always have the choice between a restriction and an individual premium supplement?
Sanitas aims to offer as many applicants with pre-existing conditions as possible the choice between a restriction and an individual premium supplement, however this cannot be guaranteed.
