Fitness and prevention: costs covered by Sanitas

Prevention is better than cure. We support your efforts to keep fit and stay healthy. Our basic and supplementary insurance plans pay contributions to preventive care, check-ups and health promotion measures.

What costs are covered by basic insurance?

Preventive care benefits under basic insurance are regulated in the health insurance benefits ordinance. For example, basic insurance does not pay contributions to your fitness centre membership, but it does cover some preventive care measures, such as:

  • Prophylactic vaccinations
  • Gynaecological check-ups
  • Colonoscopies for people aged between 50 and 65

What costs are covered by supplementary insurance?

Supplementary insurance plans augment basic insurance benefits. For example, they cover excess or additional costs for preventive care and support your efforts to live a healthy lifestyle.

Health promotion

Exercise plays a key role in staying healthy, which is why Sanitas encourages people to be active in their daily life. For example, we pay up to CHF 200 per calendar year towards fitness centre memberships and courses.

Conditions:

  • Fitness centre membership of at least 6 months for equipment-based strength and endurance training
  • Fitness centre with quality label/certification:
    - Qualitop / QualiCert1
    - Fitnessguide with a minimum rating of 3 stars part time care
  • Course provider with quality label/certification::
    - Qualitop / QualiCert1
    - Fitnessguide with a minimum rating of 3 stars part time care
    - Rheumaliga

This certification guarantees the quality of the providers. As a health insurer, we do not award any separate accreditations or certifications. Please refer to the terms and conditions of the individual insurance plans for the exact requirements.

1Following the separation of Qualitop and QualiCert in 2021, some fitness centres/course providers may now be only Qualitop or only QualiCert certified (previously all QualiCert-certified fitness centres/course providers automatically had the Qualitop label). Sanitas currently reimburses the insured amount for both Qualitop and QualiCert-certified fitness centres/course providers.

Exercise and earn rewards with the Sanitas Portal

The Sanitas Active feature encourages you to exercise regularly. It counts your steps and tracks your activity while cycling or swimming. You receive a coin for every daily target reached. You can exchange the coins you’ve collected for vouchers.

For a better quality of life: Sanitas health programmes

Some risks can be avoided or reduced to a minimum. However, anyone can be struck down by an illness at some point in their life. It helps if you are aware of the signs and have the right information.

Our free health programmes are designed to help you avoid accidents or illnesses, gain more confidence in dealing with chronic conditions, or get back in the swing of everyday life after an accident or illness.

Conditions for participation

Participation in the health programmes is free of charge. Depending on the programme, participation is open to insureds with basic insurance plus a supplementary hospital insurance or supplementary insurance plan. To take part in the Fall prevention programme, insureds must have the risk of accident included under basic insurance.
