Frequently asked questions

  • What is a confirmation of insurance for stays abroad?

The confirmation of insurance for stays abroad is an official document issued by your health insurance provider. It confirms that you have insurance cover and gives you access to medical care abroad.

  • Why do I need confirmation of insurance for my trip abroad?

Some countries, such as Cuba, Russia or the USA, require additional confirmation from your health insurance provider. It confirms that you have adequate insurance and that the costs of any treatment will be covered. For most trips, e.g. within EU or EFTA states or in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, your insurance card is sufficient. The back of the card serves as a European insurance certificate. When you show the card, the costs of outpatient and inpatient treatment will be settled directly with your health insurance provider.

  • For which countries do I need confirmation of insurance from my health insurance provider?

For example for Cuba, Ecuador, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Iran or Algeria. For Canada and the USA, you need confirmation of insurance if you are staying in the country for longer than 90 days. We recommend that you check the current entry requirements with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA) before you travel.

  • How long does it take to receive the confirmation?

You will receive the confirmation immediately via email or as a message in the Sanitas Portal.

  • What happens if I cannot produce the confirmation of insurance on site?

You may have to pay for treatment yourself in advance and submit receipts for subsequent reimbursement from your health insurer. The costs can quickly add up. In the worst case, you could also be refused entry.
