Can I take out insurance even if my pet has a pre-existing health condition?
Yes, that’s generally possible. It depends primarily on the type of illness and how severely it affects your pet’s health. To make everything as transparent as possible, we ask you some health questions about your pet before the insurance policy is finalised. Based on this information, we can determine whether insurance cover is available. The good news for you: Once you’ve taken out pet insurance, you can rely on our coverage – without any restrictions.

Can I chose any vet?
Yes, you are free to visit any veterinary practice in Switzerland for treatment. For costs to be covered, the treatment must be performed or prescribed by an approved veterinarian.

Is there a waiting period for pet insurance?
Yes, there is a waiting period for pet insurance. Accidents and illnesses are covered 14 days after commencement of insurance.

Which breeds can be insured?
We welcome any breed. We insure purebred, mixed-breed and crossbreed cats and dogs.

Are hereditary diseases and breed-specific conditions covered?
Yes, our Smart and Premium pet insurance plans cover hereditary diseases and breed-specific conditions.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question; it depends on various factors:

How much does treatment at a veterinary practice cost?
Regular veterinary expenses, such as deworming, vaccinations and general check-ups, amount to several hundred Swiss francs a year. For serious illnesses such as cancer or for bone fractures following an accident, treatment can cost several thousand Swiss francs.

Do veterinary treatments cost the same everywhere?
No, because veterinary rates are not regulated by the government. Each practice sets its own prices. It’s therefore worth comparing rates.

Are costs for chronic illnesses covered?
Yes, pet insurance covers most of the veterinary costs resulting from chronic illnesses.

Can I take out pet insurance later?
You can insure your pet from as early as 8 weeks of age, or later – even into old age. The sooner, the better. This way, congenital conditions and hereditary diseases are covered from the outse.

Are costs covered for veterinary treatment abroad?
Routine veterinary treatments are not covered. Coverage is provided exclusively for emergencies that occur during a temporary stay (up to three months) abroad in a neighbouring country. These include:
- Germany
- France
- Italy
- Liechtenstein
- Austria
