Daily benefits insurance for sickness: protection against loss of earnings

Incapacity to work due to accidents or illness can affect anyone. Thousands of people become unable to work every year and are off work for an average of three weeks. Depending on their insurance, they face smaller or larger shortfalls. The Salary daily benefits insurance plan protects you against these risks.

Your benefits with Salary

Salary comes into play as soon as your employer’s statutory employment provisions for illness or accident cease. You receive benefits for up to 720 days within a period of 900 days. You decide how long you want to wait until the first payout.

  • Up to CHF 500 a day for a maximum of 720 days
  • Loss of earnings for staff, loss of earnings for self-employed
  • Option: Costs of home help

Loss of earnings or loss of income

If you are employed, you are insured under your employer’s group daily benefits insurance or mandatory accident insurance. You continue to receive your salary. However, continuation of salary payments is regulated by law and is available for a maximum of two years.

If you are unable to work as a result of a serious illness or accident, you receive 100% of your salary from your employer. How long your salary payments continue depends on the particular circumstances and how long you’ve been employed.  If you're unable to work for a longer period, the daily benefits insurance pays 80%. But only if your employer has taken out a daily benefits plan.

If you don’t have daily benefits through your employer, you ought to take out loss of earnings insurance to protect yourself against financial shortfalls. It’s even more important for the self-employed and freelancers, because their earnings stop from the first day that they can’t work.

Who is daily benefits insurance suitable for?

Daily benefits insurance is voluntary and can be taken out for accident, illness or pregnancy. This plan is suitable for you if:

  • You are insured through your employer for a period of less than two years.
  • You work on a part-time basis with a low quota
  • You are self-employed
  • You are a housewife/house husband

Voluntary daily benefits insurance pursuant to HIA

Under basic insurance you can include daily benefits as a voluntary benefit: for illness, accident or pregnancy. This inclusion is voluntary daily benefits insurance pursuant to HIA.

Key benefits

  • Benefits for up to 720 days within a period of 900 days
  • From an incapacity to work of 50% and above
  • For maternity: daily benefits for 16 weeks

Important: For maternity, daily benefits insurance pursuant to HIA must be taken out at least 270 days before the birth.

Under basic insurance you can claim maximum daily benefits of CHF 10 per day. Higher amounts are automatically included in the daily benefits insurance pursuant to IPA. That’s why most people take out voluntary daily benefits insurance pursuant to IPA.

Voluntary daily benefits insurance pursuant to IPA

The Salary daily benefits insurance is a supplementary insurance plan pursuant to IPA. It covers earnings or income lost as a result of incapacity to work due to accident or illness. You can choose the waiting period for the daily benefits to decide how long you wait until the first payout.
