What are outpatient procedures?

In contrast to inpatient procedures, an outpatient procedure allows you to leave hospital the same day. This is because more and more operations are so standardised and safe that an overnight stay in hospital is no longer necessary. But also because the government and cantons publish lists of operations that are to be performed as standard as outpatient procedures. Here are a few examples: meniscus surgery, hernias, kidney stones, tonsillectomy.

The ongoing shift towards outpatient services is expected to continue in the future. It is already established practice in countries like the USA, for example. With Hospital Day Comfort, you are well prepared for this transition. This supplementary insurance plan is an add-on for statutory health insurance and ensures you enjoy private coverage for outpatient procedures. Your benefits:

  • Before the procedure: A personal contact from Sanitas is on hand to support you throughout the process – for example by organising a second medical opinion. You can also choose at which renowned partner hospital you would like to undergo the procedure. The handy partner hospital locator helps you find the right service provider quickly and easily.
  • On the day of the procedure: No overnight stay is planned for outpatient procedures. However, to ensure you can approach the procedure with peace of mind, Hospital Day Comfort covers your travel expenses and the cost of overnight accommodation in a nearby hotel (with an accompanying person) or in a partner hospital (without an accompanying person). You can also be sure that you are in the best of hands thanks to the free choice of doctors (including the senior physician). After the procedure, you benefit from a comfortable private recovery area including a meal – for the best possible recovery before returning home.
  • After the procedure: With outpatient procedures, you usually leave the hospital on the same day. So it is possible that you will still be exhausted or restricted in your mobility when you get home. Hospital Day Comfort pays up to CHF 1,000 for care services (e.g. for children or pets) and offers attractive vouchers (e.g. Migros Online, Uber, Orell Füssli) to help out.

We recommend this supplementary insurance to anyone who values a higher standard of hospital care. For example, free choice of doctors (including senior physician), maximum comfort and personal care before, during and after the outpatient procedure.

Do you already have private or semiprivate hospital insurance?

This covers medical procedures for which you have to stay at least one night in hospital. However, if the procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis, you lose your additional benefits. Hospital Day Comfort closes these gaps in your cover so you can enjoy a private level of hospital care for outpatient procedures, too.

Don’t have hospital insurance yet?

Hospital Day Comfort ensures you receive a private level of care for outpatient procedures and you enjoy the benefits of private supplementary hospital insurance at an attractive price.
